The G.N.G. Club is in the heart of Petit-Rocher, a small village about twenty minutes north of Bathurst, New Brunswick. We are proud to have a space we can call our own, a grand achievement in an area that had nothing to offer the GLBT community as recently as ten years ago.
My partner and I moved to Bathurst in 1991 and I have to say that we were warmly received by both the gay and straight communities alike, probably due to the more relaxed and tolerant attitude of the French speaking population. I was pleased to hear a short while after that some of the local GLBT community wanted to get something going for themselves and I readily accepted an invitation to attend one of the first meetings held to establish an organized GLBT community. That meeting, held on the beach at the home of one of the first members elected to the organization executive, was the start of what is now Gais.es Nor Gays Inc.
The membership now includes addresses from Gaspé to Miramichi, Campbellton to the Acadian Peninsula. A small space in the Madisco community centre in Petit-Rocher was chosen as it is equi-distant from all of these areas. We now have a 1200 sq. ft. space and have built it into a nightclub, complete with stand-up bar, DJ booth, dance floor, lights, music - Action! The GNG Club now peacefully coexists between a daycare and the Knights of Columbus hall in the community centre without incident or backlash from it's neighbors, further testament to the desire of the organization to claim it's rightful place in the community.
But there is more to G.N.G. than just a dance club. The office houses a GLBT book and video lending library and for years the association has made donations to AIDS New Brunswick, EGALE, and local food banks.
Every year a Gay Pride Camping Weekend is held, an event very well attended on
Labour Day weekend at a local campground. A media campaign is also planned to
increase the exposure of the G.N.G. Gay Phone Line in Northern New Brunswick and
there has been a desire expressed to have members resume giving talks to health
and sexuality classes at the region's high schools. The current association president
feels that it is time to re-focus on the aims of the organization - to solidify the existing
GLBT community and to reach out to those still closeted to help them "come out"
and be themselves.
